some thoughts on how to improve the course…
Over the course of the term, I’ve maintained a list of ideas on “what I would do differently next time”. I thought I’d share some of them here and invite your feedback, so do leave a comment & let me know what you think. And if you have some of your own ideas to share, please do!
- Allow course participants to blog anonymously. I apologize for not making this an option this term - I honestly didn’t think about it until a colleague suggested it to me. Do you think you would have preferred to blog anonymously (or pseudonymously)?
- Create short screencasts for some of the more complex tools (like Feed2JS & RSS2HTML).
- Consider doing a couple of class chats during the term. This term, everyone did a tremendous job with the weekly blogging, and I saw a lot of interesting discussions develop via comments & across blogs, but I’ve been thinking that a couple of synchronous meetings (over IM or Skype) would provide an opportunity to connect in real time that we didn’t have this term.
- Add optional podcasts to the reading list for the auditory learners in the class. There’s a wealth of LIS podcasts out there that we could have made better use of this term.
- Set the due date for the Final Paper Proposal later in the term (I realize that having the Proposal due a week after the Blog Review was a bit much!)
- Send course participants a “progress report” on their blogging half-way through the term. Since I don’t have strict guidelines on what I’m expecting from the weekly blog posts, I thought it would be a good idea to give students an idea of how they’re doing mid-term (something else I thought of too late this term! My apologies).
Thoughts? Comments? Other ideas? I’d love to hear them!
Amanda,
I really like the idea of providing some feedback on our blogging endeavors halfway through the course! It would have been nice to know if we needed to “step it up” or continue as usual. All of your other ideas sound like good ones. Some indication as to how much we should contribute to the delicious tag would have been great too.
All in all, it’s been a fabulous course and a wonderful learning experience with a well-rounded balance between theory and practice. Thanks for your encouraging blog comments, and your extremely hard work in preparing and facilitating the course! Happy Holidays!
I agree that feedbacks on our blog postings would have been helpful as well, but looking at everyone else’s blogs and getting a feel for what to do was useful for me. I think that having podcasts availible for readings would have been a really interesting option considering the nature of the course. Although I am not an auditory learner, having the option to try out one of the tools we are studying in a functional way would have been a great learning experience.
Thanks for the great course.
I would have appreciated some screencasts -for RSS tools especially. Given the very different starting experiences (some of us were newbies while others had some /lots of experience with some of the tools) of those in the course, I think the delivery was great. Chats might be a good idea, but logistically might be a problem - although I do note that some of the other on-line courses did have one required real-time meeting. Thanks for the great learning experience!
I agree, feedback on blogging would be a good idea. I don’t know about blogging anonymously - I thought it was nice to be able to put a few faces to names (for the people I’ve met). But others’ mileage may vary…
i also would have liked some comments on the blogging… too much, too little… not indepth enough…
i think having a discussion board might be a little easier… i really felt as though i was running all around to check out other peoples blogs… i guess discussion boards are not as web 2.0 as blogs…
i don’t see why anonymous blogging is necessary… i think we should know our classmates and their ideas… if this were an inclass-class and our classmates spoke up, we’d see them and hear them…
Very good site. Thank you!
